Breaking news alert for flash flood warning on a blue background.

Colbert and Lauderdale Counties, Alabama —

What is happening:

The National Weather Service in Huntsville has issued a Flash Flood Warning for Colbert County and south central Lauderdale County in northwestern Alabama, in effect through 11:45 AM CST on Sunday, November 1. Doppler radar showed thunderstorms producing heavy rain between Florence and Cherokee, with between 4 and 5 inches of rain already fallen. Rain is falling at 1 to 2 inches per hour, and another 1 to 3 inches is possible in the warned area. Flash flooding is already occurring.

Local impacts:

Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms is threatening small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses, and other low-lying and poor-drainage areas. Roads in the Florence and Cherokee areas may already be under water, and water levels can rise quickly with little warning.

What to do:

- Turn around, don't drown. Never drive through flooded roads — most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Move to higher ground if water is rising near you.

- Do not walk through flowing water.

- Report observed flooding to local emergency services or law enforcement.
