Flash Flood Warning for Cibola, McKinley, and Sandoval Counties Through 7:30 PM MDT

Laguna Pueblo, New Mexico — The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flash Flood Warning for southwestern Sandoval County, northeastern Cibola County, and east central McKinley County, in effect through 7:30 PM MDT.

What is happening:

At 3:33 PM MDT, Doppler radar showed thunderstorms dropping heavy rain across the warned area. Up to an inch of rain has already fallen this afternoon, and some spots in this region have taken heavy rain over the past couple of days. Up to three-quarters of an inch more is possible. Flash flooding is happening now or about to begin.

Local impacts:

Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, and underpasses. In hilly country, low-water crossings can turn dangerous fast in heavy rain. Floodwater can rise quickly even in places that are not getting rain right now, fed by runoff from nearby storms.

What to do:

- Never drive across a flooded road — turn around, don't drown. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.

- Find an alternate route instead of trying to cross flooded low spots.

- Stay aware of your surroundings and keep an eye on changing water levels.
