What is happening:

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued another Flash Flood Warning for east central Cibola County, this one through 4:30 PM Mountain time. Afternoon thunderstorms are dumping heavy rain over the area — up to an inch has already fallen, with another half inch possible — and radar indicates flooding is happening now or about to begin.

Local impacts:

Creeks and streams are the first to go, and low-lying parts of Laguna Pueblo, New Laguna, Mesita, Acoma Pueblo, Paraje, Seama, and Acomita are directly in the flood zone. Urban flooding is also expected on streets, highways, and underpasses — including Interstate 40 between mile markers 106 and 121, where ponding and running water can take lanes with almost no warning.

What to do:

- Never drive through flooded roadways — turn around, don't drown. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Watch your surroundings on I-40 and local roads; slow down and be ready to exit to higher ground.

- Don't walk through rushing water — six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock you down.

- Check on neighbors near creeks or low crossings.
