Flash Flood Warning for Cherokee and Polk Counties Through 5:15 AM

Breaking news alert for flash floods in two counties

Cherokee County, North Carolina — The National Weather Service in Morristown, Tennessee, has issued a Flash Flood Warning for southwestern Cherokee County in North Carolina and southeastern Polk County in Tennessee, in effect until 5:15 AM EST on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

What is happening:

Local law enforcement reported thunderstorms dropping heavy rain across the warned area early Thursday morning. Between 2 and 3 inches of rain have already fallen, and up to 1 more inch is possible before the rain lets up. Flash flooding is happening now or is about to begin in low-lying spots, along small streams and creeks, and on roads that flood first.

Local impacts:

Life-threatening flash flooding is the main danger. Water can rise fast on roads, in dips and underpasses, and near streams and creeks. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles, and it is harder to spot flooded roads at night.

What to do:

- Turn around, do not drown. Never drive through a flooded road.

- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.

- Stay out of flooded areas on foot and in a car, and keep children and pets away from rising water.

- Be extra careful at night, when it is harder to see how deep floodwater is.
