Flash Flood Warning for Chaves, De Baca and Roosevelt Counties Through 8:30 PM MDT
Chaves County, New Mexico — A Flash Flood Warning is in effect for parts of eastern New Mexico through 8:30 PM MDT on Thursday, as thunderstorms drop heavy rain over ground that is already saturated.
What is happening: The National Weather Service in Albuquerque says radar shows thunderstorms producing heavy rain across southeastern De Baca County, western Roosevelt County and north-central Chaves County. Between 1 and 3 inches of rain have already fallen, and another 1 to 2 inches are possible. Flash flooding is happening or is expected to start shortly, mainly in rural areas of the warned counties.
Local impacts: Small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets, underpasses and other low-lying and poorly drained spots are at risk of flooding.
What to do:
- Never drive through flooded roads — turn around, do not drown.
- Most flood deaths happen in vehicles, so do not try to cross water of unknown depth.
- Move to higher ground if water starts rising near you.
