Flash Flood Warning for Catron and Cibola Counties Through Midnight MDT

Weather alert graphic for flash flood warning in New Mexico.

Catron County, NM — The National Weather Service in Albuquerque has issued a Flash Flood Warning for northeastern Catron County and southern Cibola County in west-central New Mexico, in effect through midnight MDT.

**What is happening:** At 7:59 PM MDT, Doppler radar showed thunderstorms dumping heavy rain over the warned area. Up to 1 inch of rain has already fallen, and another inch is possible before the storms move on. Flash flooding is likely in low spots, washes, and creeks.

**Local impacts:** Roads can flood fast, especially in low-lying and desert-wash terrain. Dirt roads will turn muddy and impassable, and paved roads and underpasses could go underwater. After dark it is harder to see floodwater, so use extra caution driving tonight.

**What to do:**

- If you see water rising around you, get to higher ground immediately.

- Turn around, don't drown when you meet a flooded road. Most flood deaths happen in vehicles.

- Never drive through water of unknown depth — just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down, and 12 inches can carry a car away.
