# Flash Flood Emergency for Dodge City and Central Ford County Through 5:30 PM

**Dodge City, Kansas —** The National Weather Service in Dodge City has issued a Flash Flood Emergency for Dodge City and central Ford County, in effect until 5:30 PM CDT Thursday. A separate Flash Flood Warning covers northwestern Ford County until 5:15 PM CDT.

**What is happening:** At about 2:30 PM CDT, emergency managers reported thunderstorms dumping heavy rain across central Ford County. Between 3 and 6 inches of rain have already fallen, and another 3 to 5 inches could fall before the storms move out. Flash flooding is already underway in the Dodge City area. In northwestern Ford County, radar and rain gauges show 2 to 4 inches of rain on the ground with 2 to 4 more inches possible, and flooding there is either happening now or about to start.

**Local impacts:** Forecasters call this a particularly dangerous situation. Fast-rising water is threatening creeks and streams, city streets, highways and underpasses across the warned area. With several more inches of rain still possible, roads that are passable now could be underwater within minutes. Never assume a flooded road is safe to cross — most flood deaths happen in cars.

**What to do:**

- Move to higher ground right now if you are anywhere near flooding in Dodge City or Ford County.

- Do not try to drive through flooded roads. Turn around, don't drown.

- Stay off the roads unless you are fleeing a flooding area — the rain is still coming down and conditions are changing fast.
