California's wildfire fight rages on as 'particularly dangerous' fire threat continues

FAA Investigates Drone Collision with Firefighting Aircraft Amid Ongoing Los Angeles Wildfires

FAA Investigates Drone Collision with Firefighting Aircraft Amid Ongoing Los Angeles Wildfires
By TNW News Breaking Team – January 10, 2025

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating a collision between a drone and a firefighting aircraft that occurred Thursday over the Palisades neighborhood in Los Angeles. The incident comes as multiple wildfires continue to devastate the region, with thousands of structures destroyed and tens of thousands of people displaced.

Drone Collision Details

According to the FAA, the firefighting aircraft sustained damage after being struck by a drone while operating over the Palisades fire on January 9. Fire officials reported the collision and informed the FAA about the potential danger posed by such incidents.

“It’s a federal crime, punishable by up to 12 months in prison, to interfere with firefighting efforts on public lands,” the FAA warned in a statement. “The FAA can impose a civil penalty of up to $75,000 against any drone pilot who interferes with wildfire suppression, law enforcement, or emergency response operations.”

Ongoing Wildfire Impact

The Palisades wildfire, which ignited earlier this week, has become the most destructive fire in Los Angeles County's history. At least 1,000 structures have been destroyed since Tuesday, and efforts to control the blaze continue as dangerous conditions persist.

Evacuations have been further complicated by heavy traffic, as many residents attempt to flee the fires. A list of current road closures is available through local authorities and can be accessed via TNW Weather.

Arson Suspected in Kenneth Fire

In another troubling development, the LAPD confirmed that the Kenneth Fire, which has also been consuming parts of Los Angeles, is now under investigation as an arson case. One individual has been arrested in connection with the fire, which continues to threaten homes and critical infrastructure.

Resources for Fire Victims and First Responders

As the fires rage on, numerous organizations and companies have mobilized to offer support for evacuees and first responders. The following resources are currently available:

  • Uber: $40 credit for Los Angeles County residents evacuating to shelters (use code WILDFIRE25).
  • Lyft: $25 vouchers for up to 500 users through January 15 (use code CAFIRERELIEF25).
  • Airbnb: Temporary housing assistance for displaced individuals.
  • AT&T and Verizon: Unlimited data, talk, and text for affected areas through February 6.
  • Planet Fitness and Crunch Gym: Free access to facilities for evacuees and first responders.

A full list of shelter locations, including the Westwood Recreation Center and the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, can be found on TNWWeather.com.

Temporary Flight Restrictions

The FAA has imposed temporary flight restrictions across affected areas, limiting drone flights and air traffic to prevent further disruptions to firefighting efforts. These restrictions are part of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of both fire crews and the public.

Public Safety Advisory

Authorities are urging the public to avoid using drones near firefighting zones and emergency operations. Any interference with firefighting efforts is not only illegal but also significantly jeopardizes the safety of firefighters and residents.
