Blizzard Warning for Western Alaska Through Saturday Morning

A digital news alert screen for a blizzard warning in Alaska.

Shishmaref, Alaska — What is happening: The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has issued a Blizzard Warning for the Bering Strait Coast, Shishmaref, and the Seward Peninsula, in effect from 4 AM Friday through early Saturday morning AKDT. A strong Arctic system is moving in with blowing snow and winds gusting as high as 60 miles per hour — it is the wind, not the snow totals (about 2 inches), that makes this dangerous. Local impacts: Falling and blowing snow will cut visibility to under a quarter mile at times, and travel could become very difficult. Gusts near 60 mph could knock out power in some spots. Forecasters expect the snow to switch over to rain early Saturday morning. What to do: - Stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary. - Prepare for possible power outages: keep phones charged and flashlights handy. - Bring pets and livestock in or shelter them from the wind. - Dress for bitter wind chills and limit time outdoors.
