Blizzard Warning for Seward Peninsula Through Saturday Morning

# Blizzard Warning for Seward Peninsula Through Saturday Morning
Nome, AK —
**What is happening:** The National Weather Service in Fairbanks has issued a Blizzard Warning for the Seward Peninsula, running from 4:00 AM Friday through early Saturday morning. It covers the southern Seward Peninsula coast, the interior Seward Peninsula, and the Bering Strait coast including Shishmaref. Snow will pile up fast — 3 to 6 inches on the southern coast, 8 to 15 inches in the interior, and 1 to 3 inches along the Bering Strait coast — with winds gusting as high as 65 mph whipping it into whiteouts. The snow is expected to change over to rain early Saturday morning.
**Local impacts:** Travel could become very difficult across the region. Blowing and falling snow may drop visibility below a quarter mile. Strong winds could knock out power, especially on the coast. Conditions will turn dangerous quickly after the snow starts Friday morning.
**What to do:**
- Stay off the roads once the snow starts — if you must travel, let someone know your route and take winter survival gear.
- Secure loose outdoor items and charge phones before the wind picks up.
- Keep pets indoors and check on neighbors who may lose power.
- Watch the forecast through Friday — conditions can change fast on the coast.
